The Tor Project auctions the first Onion domain name ever created as an NFT
The Tor Project is auctioning the first Tor Onion domain name (duskgytldkxiuqc6.onion) ever created as the NFT.
The non-profit Tor project runs on the Tor decentralized network on the Internet, allowing users to anonymously access websites and special Onion URLs (.onion) that can only be accessed through Tor.
Tor is often referred to as the "dark web." Tor allows website developers to create special onion services that can only be accessed through the Tor network and provide anonymous information to service owners.
The first onion service created by the Tor project is Dusk at http://duskgytldkxiuqc6.onion, which is usually used as an example onion service in Tor-related documents and help files.
As a fundraising event, Tor auctioned the RSA1024 encrypted private key used to create Dusk, and an NFT artwork called "Dreaming at Dusk" created by the key of Itzel Yard ( @ixshells ).
The Tor auction took place on Foundation.app, and the Edward Snowden platform was recently auctioned to NFT for 2,224.00 ETH (~7 million US dollars) .
The successful bidder will receive the key on November 1, 2021, and Tor Project stated that it can be delivered as the "successful bidder" wishes.
“In the future, the successful bidder will be called the new “owner” of the “Dreaming at Dusk” NFT at 00:00 UTC on November 1, 2021. The successful bidder will receive the RSA1024 private key of this onion service, and the private key shall be based on their Send it any way you like — let it encrypt the information through the protocol of their choice, upload it to the blockchain, or physically ship it in the form of a U disk or DVD drive."
"After they receive the private key, the private key belongs to the successful bidder and can be used in a manner deemed appropriate by the successful bidder. The successful bidder can contact us at dusk[at]torproject.org. If the owner wishes, they can refuse to accept the private key "The auction description currently reads.
Readers should note that after Tor completes the migration of the Tor onion service from version 2 to version 3 , the auction winner will receive Dusk's private key. This obsolescence means that the winner cannot use the Dusk private key to host the onion service, and the key will only be a relic in Tor's history.
